THE ALLURE OF THE CROWN

No products of ours have had as many order requests from customers as have our crowns and tiaras. I imported a selection of crowns about ten years ago and since they sold out, I have had countless requests for them.  So, I recently took myself off to India to search for that elusive team of craftsmen and –women who make these incredible iron crowns, beautifully embellished with rhinestones and alike.

I am not sure where society’s fascination with crowns and tiaras stems from.  Perhaps it is from the fairytales that many of us were brought up on in which the heroes and heroines are often identified by these beautiful headpieces.  Or perhaps its appeal lies in the fact that these are items that very few of us will ever get the opportunity to wear in their full glory.

The history of crowns is deeply entangled in the history of society, and its form and purpose have evolved over the centuries. From the flower and laurel wreaths used by the ancient Greeks and Romans to signify honour, love or victory to the thorn crown of Jesus Christ which symbolised suffering, crowns and tiaras have played a part in the religion, literature and legends. Today, they have become an emblem of victory, sovereignty and empire.  As it marks the ultimate level of social superiority and power, the wearing of a crown is seen as a great honour.  Ultimately, a crown is a visible marker of the success of the wearer; hence the term “crowning achievement”.

Although Masquerade’s range of crowns is, strictly speaking, not to be worn, our crowns will add a royal touch to your interior decorating.  They make for regal, exotic candle holders, cake toppers (think wedding and christening cakes), napkin rings, flower holders and table decorations.  So dare to be the king or queen in your own house and own a crown or two!

Did you know?

Crowns have a circular base, cover the whole head, and are worn strictly by kings and queens; tiaras have a semicircular base, cover the front of the head only, and are worn mostly by women.
