See through my eyes, get into my head, join me on my journey…
My love for pure linen is no secret, but the excitement when I discovered these 100% linen Damask towels, is undescribable! New but the look and feel of Vintage linen… but first, I must explain Damask.
Damask derives its name from the fine patterned fabrics produced in Damascus (Syria) in the European Middle Ages. True damask was originally wholly of silk, but gradually the name came to be applied to a certain type of patterned fabric regardless of fibre.
Damask’s design is created through the weaving technique (woven on Jacquard looms), which is a combination of two different weaving techniques—the design is woven using a satin weave, while the background is achieved through a plain weave. When the light reflects on the satin weave, the pattern reveals itself.
Damask (unlike brocade or jacquard) has the same pattern on both sides (reversible) and is not raised but has a flat, dense weave.
I came across 100% European linen damask while visiting Portugal, which is heavy, has an beautiful drape and will last a lifetime. These special items are available for the bathroom and kitchen and will make for a perfect gift or a personal spoil whilst honouring an ancient craft. Pure luxury and to my mind a must have!
