See through my eyes, get into my head, join me on my journey…
I am often asked why I always have a skull or two in my shop and I just as often reply, tongue-in-cheek, “We all walk around with one you know”.
But the real answer is that I simply admire the honesty of skulls and skeletons.
I think most South Africans have, maybe on a game drive or at a game lodge or perhaps from a relative’s private game collection, come across an animal skull or two. I can still remember the skulls mounted on the wall of my grandfather’s stoep, and in particular, the stuffed anteater on his desk … but taxidermy is for another day.
I find clean white skulls beautiful and am intrigued by what houses the centre of thought. It is exciting to see how something looks when stripped bare. To me it is honouring what once was life – and without being cynical – contemplating the destiny that awaits us all.
