See through my eyes, get into my head, join me on my journey…
The heart – the symbol of love….but why?
The Egyptians believed that the heart was the source of the soul, emotions, and personality and that the heart would be weighed during judgement after death. That’s the reason why they preserved the heart during mummification but threw the brain away. Later on, Aristotle also said that the heart was the source of intelligence, emotion, and sensation, and the brain and lungs existed to cool the heart. It wasn’t until the Renaissance and later that it became clear to Europeans that the heart functioned solely to pump blood.
By then a lot of influential literature in English and other languages was written at a time when the heart was thought to be the source of thought, emotions, and the soul. Even though we now know the scientific truth, the use of the heart as a metaphor and symbol for the emotions of a person has remained.
Maybe this is a good thing for the heart has an attractive shape.. unlike the brain.
Saying those “three little words” does not require a specific time, place or manner, but February and in particular February the 14th, has become the commercial time to display your romantic love for each other… and why not?
