See through my eyes, get into my head, join me on my journey…
As a child growing up in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, in order to see real Christmas lights, we had to travel all the way to Joubert Park in Johannesburg. Needless to say, I was filled with a sense of adventure, anticipation and excitement.
I’m aware that, for many, the true meaning of Christmas has become diluted, but on a purely aesthetic level, I am still in love with twinkling lights, stars, snowflakes and the glitter of the festive season.
Last year, after Christmas, I decided not to take down the Christmas lights from my back stoep wall, choosing to leave them in-situ and turn them on almost every night this year – it‘s magical and brings back that feeling of childhood excitement to my belly.
Whether you are big into Christmas decorations or not a small token of the “season of togetherness and giving” is always a good thing. Now that my children are bigger and there is no more pressure for a tree (until grandchildren arrive), I usually opt for a simple wreath on the door and a few stars hanging from the chandeliers.
Happy Holidays to all! (en hou matigheid voor oë).
